James Holmes, 24, is accused of opening fire in a crowded theater during a midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, leaving a dozen dead and more than 50 wounded.
12 people died and more than 50 were wounded in a shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, CO, during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."
Police said 71 people were shot in the movie theater, making it the worst public shooting in U.S. history, ranked by the total number of victims.
Judge Carlos Samour, Jr., on June 4 accepted James Holmes' attorneys request to change their client's plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. The request came in mid-May after 2 months of evaluations.
Three hospitals caring for wounded victims have announced they will limit or completely waive all medical bills. Children's Hospital Colorado, the Medical Center of Aurora and Swedish Medical Center will use donations and charity funds to cover medical expenses for the 22 shooting victims.
About $5 million in donations will be split among the victims. Ken Feinberg, who was asked to apportion the funds, said the families of the 12 people who were killed and of victims with permanent brain damage will receive $175,000 each. The remaining victims will receive an amount based on the length of their hospital stay.
The widow of a man killed in the movie theater massacre is suing a psychiatrist who saw Holmes a month before the shooting. The widow claims the doctor was obligated to alert police about Holmes' mental condition.
James Holmes reportedly mailed a package to a University of Colorado psychiatrist containing a notebook and drawings detailing his intended killing spree.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates says 911 calls about the incident started at 12:39am and numbered in the hundreds. Officers were at the movie theater within 90 seconds, he said. More than 200 officers eventually responded.
Oates said suspect James Holmes was carrying an AR-15 assault rifle -- the civilian version of the M-16 -- along with a Remington 12-gauge shotgun and a .40-caliber Glock handgun and had another Glock in his car. All four weapons were purchased legally. Holmes also had a magazine capable of holding more than 100 rounds of ammunition, and he set off two devices to distract the crowd with smoke.
