The educational company founded and hosted on TV by LeVar Burton says it needs the money to bring its materials to the Web and classrooms.
Reading Rainbow passed $5 million in pledges ahead of the July 2 cutoff for its Kickstarter campaign. On June 26, Burton announced that comedian Seth MacFarlane would match up to $1 million, which brings the combined total of pledges to more than $6 million.
The company has pledged to offer in-classroom materials for free to needy schools. Burton says that with $6 million raised, 12,500 schools will receive free materials.
On June 30, two days before the end of the Kickstarter campaign, the campaign hit a record for garnering the site's highest number of donors, with upwards of 92,000 backers.
Reading Rainbow is also among Kickstarter's all-time Top 5 highest earning campaigns, alongside "Veronica Mars," Pebble, Pono and Ouya. Each of those campaigns on June 30 offered rewards to donors who support Reading Rainbow in its final two days.
